Frequently asked questions
Questions and answers about using folino, what it costs, and how it handles your data.
Getting started
Do I need to sign in?
No. Reading, playback, annotation, editing, import, and export all work without signing in. You only need to sign in to sync with your other devices and to use shared groups.
You can sign in with Apple, with Google, or with a sign-in link sent to your email address.
Does folino cost anything?
Reading, playback, annotation, and editing are free, and you can try sync and shared groups for free, too.
To sync more scores, or to have more groups with more members in them, subscribe to folino plus or folino pro, available as monthly or yearly auto-renewing subscriptions. Each plan’s limits and price are shown on the plan screen in the app.
Only whoever creates a group needs a plan. Invited members join without one, and can open and mark up the scores.
Which devices does folino run on?
iPhone and iPad (iOS 18 or later), Mac (macOS 15 or later), and Android (Android 9 or later). Sign in with the same account and your scores sync across all of them.
Score files
Which score files can I open?
MuseScore (.mscz), MusicXML (.musicxml, .mxl), MIDI, PDF, and .folino files.
folino exports to MuseScore format, PDF, MIDI, audio (.m4a), and .folino files. A PDF can include your marks.
Can I use scores made in MuseScore?
Yes. folino opens .mscz files as they are, and can export back to MuseScore format. On a Mac, notes are entered with the same keys as in MuseScore.
Can folino play back a PDF score?
Yes. folino reads a PDF score into notation when you import it. From then on, playback, transposition, showing or hiding parts, and note editing all work as they do with any other format, and you can still switch to the original PDF.
On iPhone, iPad, and Mac, folino can also read scanned paper scores. On Android, it reads PDFs made by notation software, such as those exported from MuseScore or folino.
How well a PDF reads depends on the score. Fix any misread notes by editing them.
Practice and editing
Does folino work offline?
Yes. Imported scores are stored on your device, so you can open, play, and mark them up with no connection. Scores in a shared group are downloaded in full, too, so they open in a rehearsal room or at a venue with no signal.
Syncing, and exchanging changes with a shared group, need an internet connection.
Can I read scores on a phone screen?
Switch between vertical scrolling, horizontal scrolling, and pages, and hide the parts you don’t need. Your own part reads comfortably even on a phone.
Can I use folino from the keyboard?
Yes. On a Mac, every editing command can take a keyboard shortcut. Settings > Shortcuts lists every command, and you can search them by name or by key and change them. On iPad, a hardware keyboard works too.
Can I write a score from scratch?
Yes. Choose the instrumentation, key, time signature, and tempo, and folino creates a new score. Afterwards you can add parts, or change the key or time signature partway through the piece.
Creating scores is free, with no limit on how many.
Sync and shared groups
How do I sync scores with my other devices?
Sign in to folino with the same account on each device. Your scores sync along with their annotations and edits. You can turn sync off at any time in Settings.
What is a shared group?
An invite-only group for sharing scores with the members of your choir or band. A score added to the group reaches every member, note fixes included. For your marks, you choose whether to share them with the group or keep them as private notes.
How do I join a group I was invited to?
Open the invite link on a device with folino installed, and folino asks you to confirm. On a Mac, you can also paste the link into Join with Invite Link… in the menu.
Joining a group requires signing in.
Pricing and data
Where are my scores stored?
Until you sign in, your scores and marks stay on your device and are never sent anywhere. Once you sign in and turn sync on, your scores and marks are stored in the cloud so they can sync.
See the privacy policy for details.
How do I cancel a subscription?
If you subscribed on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, cancel in your Apple Account settings; if you subscribed on Android, cancel from Subscriptions in Google Play. You can cancel at any time.
After you cancel, your scores and marks stay as they are, and you can still open and edit them. What stops is syncing more scores and growing your groups.
